Resistencia es uno de los nombres más importantes del rock duro en Sudamérica, así como uno de los primeros en este género. Originarios de Caracas, Venezuela, surgieron en 1977 y tuvieron gran éxito con sus primeros discos en los inicios de los años 80, con su formación clásica, es decir: César A. Somoza T. (voz), Ricardo A. Escobar B. (batería, R.I.P. 2010), Luis Panero (bajo), Rodrigo Yoma A. (guitarra - R.I.P. 2007) y Marco T. Ciargo (guitarra). Mantuvimos una charla con Luis Panero, bajista y con César Somoza, cantante, para saber un poco más sobre Resistencia.

Q. - Cuando empezó tu interés por el rock duro en general? Cuales fueron tus principales influencias en los inicios de Cheese Factory / Resistencia?

Luis - A los 15 o 16 años. Mi hermano, que tiene 10 años más que yo tenía muchos discos pues tenían una miniteca y era rock lo que se escuchaba en aquellas épocas.

César - Podría enmarcarlo dentro de lo dieciséis, diecisiete años.

Todo el rock de finales de los años sesenta y el inicio de los setentas forma parte de mi “bagaje cultural”.

Q. - En que otros grupos has tocado antes de Resistencia?

Luis - Junto a Nicky Scarola fundamos CHEESE FACTORY alrededor de 1977-78. Luego me fui a USA (Chicago 1980-1981 +-) y armé una banda que se llamó Hammersmith Odeon-…como el teatro.

César – Ninguno.

Q. – Cuando te uniste a Resistencia? Como surgió de que te unieras a Resistencia, ya os conocíais con anterioridad?

Luis - No, al regresar a Vzla, Cheese tenía otra formación. Entre en una banda llamada Apocalipsis en la que toqué el bajo y canté. Luego la banda se disolvió y me llamaron de Resistencia. El resto es historia.

César - En 1978 conozco a Ricardo Escobar en la Universidad y decidimos formar una Banda, comenzamos a trabajar en la idea y junto a Mladen Horvat guitarra y Jaime Hernández bajo RESISTENCIA nació. Más tarde 1979 en la Universidad conocemos a Marco Ciargo y Víctor López, Rodrigo Yoma fue referido por amigos colegas estudiantes para juntar esfuerzos de la recién refundada Banda.

Q. - En los inicios incluíais alguna versión de otros grupos, tanto nacionales como extranjeros, en vuestros conciertos? O siempre tocasteis originales?

Luis - Nunca tocamos versiones ni en CF ni en Resistencia. Es obvio que tocas las canciones de los grandes para practicar y aprender, pero nunca las tocamos en vivo. Para eso componíamos las nuestras.

César - No nunca jamás. Había talento para honrar el nombre y la filosofía de la Banda.

Q. - Como era el movimiento heavy rock en Venezuela con grupos tan importantes como vosotros y Arkangel? Había mucha competición entre vosotros?

Luis - En Venezuela, lamentablemente, nunca hubo un gran movimiento, aunque otros digan que sí. Grande en comparación con tiempos anteriores pero lo justo para tocar de vez en cuando. Los que digan lo contrario mienten. Gracias a Dios fuimos de los que más tocamos…pero nada de otro mundo. Con Arkangel o con Paul nunca hubo competición. Eso se lo invento alguien. Al menos no la hubo por parte de Resistencia. De hecho, ni sabíamos que pasaba con ellos, no nos interesaba. Es que en realidad no había comparación. Ellos en lo suyo y nosotros a lo nuestro.

César - El movimiento de Rock en Venezuela necesitaba una Estrategia y eso fue lo que hicimos nosotros. La competencia siempre existirá porque somos humanos, hubo gente y grupos que buscaron establecer un roce entre bandas de un mismo género solo con el fin de beneficiarse publicitaria y comercialmente. Nosotros tuvimos extraordinarias relaciones con LA MISMA GENTE, TEMPANO, OBERTURA, CHESSE FACTORY, ALTA FRECUENCIA entre otros, conscientes de nuestro papel como músicos y el aporte que siempre deseamos legar.

Q. - Será que, alguna vez, vuestros discos de los años 80 serán editados en cd? Mantenéis conversaciones con alguna editora para eso?

Luis - Los fonogramas de Resistencia pertenecían a Color, un sello de Top Hits (empresa venezolana). Este catálogo fue adquirido por Balboa Records (empresa mexicana, creo) y ellos son los dueños. Alguna vez, Marco los contactó pero no se llegó a un acuerdo. Se pueden sacar como piratas y no creo que Balboa haga algo en contra porque las ventas no serán significativas. El que quiera que lo haga. Por ahora toda la música está en internet. El que la quiera la puede encontrar y bajársela. Inclusive en vivo o hasta en ensayos. Canal RESISTENCIA VIDA Y OBRA en youtube.

César - Con el dolor de mi alma te puedo decir que sitos en la red donde puedes comprar el álbum vinyl o cd por unos cuantos Euros eso lo vi recientemente. Un robo descarado en frente de nuestros ojos. Prefiero no seguir comentando sobre este tema.

Q. - Por qué el álbum "Zodiaco" nunca llego a ver la luz del día? Hubo dificultad en encontrar una editora? Esta situación llevo al final de Resistencia en los años 80?

Luis - Falta de interés en general. (ir a mi escrito).

César - Una falta de interés, falta de recursos. RESISTENCIA estaba viviendo sus últimos días como agrupación original.

Q. - Por esa altura en que os separasteis de Resistencia, estabais trabajando en más músicas para otro disco? Quizá otro álbum que quedará en el olvido? Más concretamente en el 87?

Luis - Si, un disco que nunca se editó que a mi parecer no era Resistencia. Busca en el archivo de mi escrito.

César - Si nos encontrábamos grabando nuestro cuarto disco.

Q. - Como ves tu experiencia en Resistencia, después de tantos años? Es algo que te tocó muy fuerte en el corazón?

Luis - Forma parte de mi vida, mi ser y mi humilde legado.

César - Me tocó el ímpetu de la juventud, me tocó el sonido de mi alma, me tocó cada latido de mi corazón y aún toca en mi memoria musical.

Q. - Te sorprende que pasado tantos años aún haya tanto interés en el grupo Resistencia y en el legado que habéis dejado?

Luis - Sí y no. Resistencia marcó una pauta en su momento y eso está escrito en la historia. Pero en realidad existimos en la memoria de gente ya bastante mayorcita. La mayoría de la gente joven no tiene ni puta idea de quienes fuimos o de lo que hicimos.

César - No deja de asombrarme nunca, la hermosura del saludo de la gente y su afección por la música que hicimos en un momento es el mejor pago por nuestra ofrenda.

Q. - Algunas veces, grupos como Obús y Barón Rojo, vinieron presentar sus trabajos a Venezuela, nunca os llegó una invitación para tocar en España también?

Luis - Eran otros tiempos en los que la inmediatez de la tecnología de hoy no existía. Era muy difícil hacer llegar tu música a otros lugares sin apoyo de la discográfica o de contactos importantes. Alguna vez existió la posibilidad, pero lamentablemente nunca se pudo concretar.

César – Nunca.

Q. – En que otros grupos has tocado después de Resistencia? Aun te gustan las sonoridades más duras del rock?

Luis - En un momento dado en que no estuve en Resistencia armé una banda llamada VAUDEVILLE. Grandes y divertidos momentos. De los mejores de mi vida como músico.

El rock y la música en general hoy en día es muy variopinta. Hay cosas interesantes y buenas bandas, pero creo que en general se ha perdido la esencia. Ya era difícil innovar en nuestra época; hoy es casi imposible. Soy, hoy por hoy, un dinosaurio del rock y seguramente mi parecer este caducado. Creo que no hay, y quizás no debe haber comparación entre épocas.

César - Forme una Banda de Jazz Rock Latino llamada DOBLE VIA en 1989 y mi banda actual es CELACANTO estamos grabando nuestro segundo álbum después del primero el cual está en internet LOS TECHOS ROJOS Y OS CUENTOS DE LA VIDA.

Q. – Como te gustaría terminar esta entrevista? Te gustaría añadir algo más?

Luis - Solo agradecer tu interés en la banda y en nuestras vidas. Hable con Cesar y voy a darle tu contacto para que él también te pueda dar una visión de su historia y de la de Resistencia. Cesar vive en Sudáfrica y tiene una banda llamada CELACANTO, que está viva y aún colea.

César - Con un gran saludo y un fraternal abrazo para ti y para todos los seguidores a quienes este papel les va a llegar.

Resistencia is one of the most important names of hard rock in South America, as well as one of the very first in this genre. Based in Caracas, Venezuela, they came up in 1977 and had great success with their first albums in the early 1980s, with their classical line up, that is: César Somoza (voice), Ricardo A. Escobar B. (Drums, RIP 2010), Luis Panero (bass), Rodrigo Yoma (guitar - RIP 2007) and Marco Ciargo (guitar). We had a talk with Luis Panero, bass player, and César Somoza, singer, to know a little more about Resistencia.

Q. - When did your interest in hard rock in general start? What were your main influences at the beginning of Cheese Factory and Resistencia?

Luis - At the age of 15 or 16 years old. My brother, who is 10 years older than me, had many records because he had a “Miniteca” and rock was what we were listening to, at that time.

César - I could frame it within sixteen, seventeen years.

All the rock of the late sixties and the beginning of the seventies is part of my “cultural baggage”.

Q. – What other bands did you play before Resistencia?

Luis - Together with Nicky Scarola, we formed CHEESE FACTORY around 1977-78. Then I went to the USA (Chicago 1980-1981 + -) and started a band called Hammersmith Odeon- ... as the theater.

César – None.

Q. - When did you join Resistencia? How did you get into them, did you already know each other’s before?

Luis - No, when I came back to Venezuela, Cheese Factory had another line-up. I joined a band called Apocalypse in which I played bass and sang. Then the band dissolved and they called from Resistance. The rest is history.

César - In 1978 I met Ricardo Escobar at the University and we decided to form a band, we started working on the idea and together with Mladen Horvat, guitar and Jaime Hernández, bass, RESISTENCIA was born. Later in 1979, at the University, we met Marco Ciargo and Víctor López, Rodrigo Yoma was referred by fellow students to join efforts of the newly refounded Band.

Q. - In the beginning did you include some version of other bands, both national and foreign, in your shows? Or did you always play originals?

Luis - We never played covers in Cheese Factory or Resistance. It's obvious that you play songs from big bands to practice and to learn, but we never played them live. For that we composed ours.

César - No, never. There was talent to honour the name and philosophy of the Band.

Q. - How was it like the heavy rock movement in Venezuela with such important bands as you and Arkangel? Was there a lot of competition between both bands?

Luis - In Venezuela, unfortunately, there was never a great movement, although others say yes. Great compared to previous times, but just enough to play from time to time. Those who say the opposite, lie. Thank God we were the ones that played most ... but nothing from other world. There was never competition with Arkangel or with Paul. Someone invented that. At least no by Resistencia. In fact, we didn't even know what was going on with them, we were not interest. There was no possible comparison. They were by their own and we by our own.

César - The Rock movement in Venezuela needed a Strategy and that was what we did. The competition will always exist because we are human, there were people and groups that sought to establish a friction between bands of the same genre only in order to benefit advertising and commercially. We had extraordinary relationships with LA MISMA GENTE, TEMPANO, OBERTURA, CHESSE FACTORY, ALTA FRECUENCIA among others, aware of our role as musicians and the contribution we always want to leave.

Q. - Could it be that, your albums from the 80's will be released on CD, one day? Do you keep conversations with any label for that?

Luis - The Resistencia albums, belonged to Color, a Top Hits label (Venezuelan company). This catalog was acquired by Balboa Records (Mexican company, I think) and they are the owners. Once, Marco contacted them but no agreement was reached. They could be released as bootlegs and I don't think Balboa will do anything against it because it won't be significant sales. Everyone who wants can do it. By now all the music is on the internet. Anyone who wants, can find it and download it. Even live or even in rehearsals. Everyone who wants can do it. César – With pain in my soul, I can tell you which websites where can you buy the vinyl or cd album for a few Euros, I saw that recently. A blatant robbery in front of our eyes.

Q. - Why did the album "Zodiaco" never see the light of the day? Was it hard to try to find a label? Did this situation lead to the end of Resistencia, in the 80's?

Luis - Lack of interest in general. Zodiac, it's just a demo. Yes, a demo. As it sounds. Something with quality to show to record companies what we intended to do. It was recorded that well for having the facility to do it in “SonoUno”, the studio run by José Ferreira and in which “Estrategia” was recorded. In fact, there are voices recorded that are not supposed to be the definitive ones, many mistakes when playing, bad synchronization, parts of songs not filled in because arrangements are missing, etc. Time, setbacks and hard reality turned those tapes into the final product, but that was not the intention. It was that, just a demo. One of those demos that in the end come alive for being what they are, but, commercially speaking, are useless. It is only half of what was intended to do. Therefore, in that beautiful country, nobody saw it clearly.

César - A lack of interest, lack of resources. RESISTENCIA was living its last days as an original band.

Q. - By that time that you break from Resistencia, were you working on more music for another album? Maybe another album that will be forgotten? More specifically in 87?

Luis - Yes, an album that was never released that in my opinion was not Resistencia.

César - Yes, we were recording our fourth album.

Q. - How do you see your experience in Resistencia, after so many years? Is it something that touched you very deep in your heart?

Luis - It is part of my life, my being and my humble legacy.

César - It touched my youth impetus, it touched the sound of my soul, it touched every beat of my heart and it still plays in my musical memory.

Q. - It surprises you that after so many years there is still so much interest in Resistencia and in your legacy?

Luis - Yes and no. Resistencia marked a pattern at their time and that's history. But in reality we still exist in the memory of people, already quite old. ost of the young people don't have a clue who we were or what we did.

César - It never ceases to amaze me, the beauty of people's greeting and their affection for the music we made in a moment it is the best payment for our offering

Q. - Sometimes, bands like Obús and Barón Rojo, came to show their works to Venezuela, have you ever been invited to play in Spain too?

Luis - Those were other times when the immediacy of today's technology did not exist. It was very difficult to get your music to other places without support from the record label or important contacts. The possibility once existed, but unfortunately could never be realized.

César – Never.

Q. - What other bands did you play after Resistencia? Do you still like the hardest sounds of rock?

Luis - At a certain time when I was out of Resistencia, I've put together a band called VAUDEVILLE. Great band and we had much fun. Some of the best of my life as musician.

Rock and music in general today are very diverse. There are interesting things and good bands, but I think in general the essence has been lost. It was already difficult to innovate in our time; today is almost impossible. Now a days I'm a rock dinosaur and surely my opinion has expired. I think there isn't, and perhaps there should not be comparison between times.

César - I formed a Latin Rock Jazz Band called DOBLE VIA in 1989 and my current band is CELACANTO we are recording our second album after the first one which is on the internet LOS TECHOS ROJOS Y OS CUENTOS DE LA VIDA.

Q. - How do you want to end up this interview? Anything more you want to say?

Luis - I just would like to thank you for your interest in the band and in our lives. I have talked to Cesar and I will give him your contact so that he can also give you a vision of his history of Resistencia. Cesar lives in South Africa and has a band called CELACANTO, which is alive and still rocks.
